music videos of inspiration- After glow

Afterglow is a song by the British record producer Wilkinson. It features uncredited vocals from Becky Hill. It was released on 13 October 2013, through RAM Records, as the fourth single from his debut album Lazers Not Included. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number 8 and topped the UK Dance Chart on 20 October 2013. The song was certified as silver in the United Kingdom for over 200,000 sales.

A music video to accompany the release of "Afterglow" was first released onto YouTube on 10 September 2013 at a total length of two minutes and fifty-two seconds. The video details a couple's five years of dating by tabulating the numbers, hours, days, and statistics of what they have done together since they first met. Australian actor, Leighton Sharpe, plays the role of Paul in the video and Danish model, Ida Marie, plays the role of D
The reason i like this video is that it explains the story through words on screen as well as acting. This helps explain the story line as well as additional information for the viewers. I believe this allows a more personal connection between video and viewer as its creating a realistic experience that the viewer can relate to. I may carry this idea of information on screen int my music video to help tell the story i am portraying.

music videos of inspiration - Andy Grammer

i have chosen some of my personal favourite music videos from different types of artists to see what I like about there videos and also what people my age think of them.Once i get there feedback i can see what type of song i want to use my music video.

Andy Grammer

Andrew "Andy" Grammer was born December 3, 1983 and is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is signed to S-Curve Records. His debut album, Andy Grammer, was released in 2011 and spawned the hit singles "Keep Your Head Up" and "Fine by Me". His second album Magazines or Novels was released in 2014, with "Back Home" as the first single. The album's second single, "Honey, I'm Good.", is his biggest hit to date, peaking at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The reason why i really Grammers music is that his songs are relatable which i believe is important for an artist as it allows a connection to his audience. His videos are effective as they are simple but with a deeper message. An example of one his videos where there is a deep message is "miss me" its about the end of something can bring a new better beginning.

thriller by micheal jackson - the original music video?

Jackson dominated pop culture owning the 80s as Elvis had owned the 50s and the Beatles the 60s. To rule the entertainment universe had been his dream since he belted out “I Want You Back” on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969 as the precocious lead singer of the Jackson 5.

Michael Jackson's Thriller  is a 13-minute music video for the song of the same name released on December 2, 1983. It was directed by John Landis, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Jackson. It was MTV's first world premiere video. Voted as the most influential pop music video of all time. Guinness World Records listed it in 2006 as the "most successful music video", selling over nine million copies. In 2009, the video was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, the first music video to ever receive this honor, for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant. The track was also listed at number one on "The Top 10 Halloween Songs" by Billboard.

How i am choosing my target audience

I am now deciding what audience i will be targeting so that my video can be suited to them and there conventions.
I believe the audience i will targeting is ages 15-25.This is due to me being able to fit into this category therefore i will know myself while filming what this audience would want. Also due to me wanting to use a pop type song which is the what this audience more listens to in the charts.
Lastly I will have this age range available to give me feedback and ideas about what they want from this video.

Due to this target market starting at 15 there will be no explicit content. This audience starts at 15 as most teens have a device at this age where they can stream or download music and watch music videos.

Personal favorite music video Sia - Chandelier

I have decided to share my favourite music videos all from different types of artists to identify what i believe makes an interesting and successful music video.

  Sia - Chandelier

The music video for "Chandelier" was released on 6 May 2014. It features Maddie Ziegler a then-11-year-old dancer. In the video, Ziegler wears a medium-length blonde wig matching the one that Sia used to promote the album. Throughout the video, Ziegler dances in a deserted, dirty apartment "while spinning, kicking, leaping, crawling, falling, twirling and hiding herself behind window drapes".An alternative one take version of the clip was released in June 2014.Ziegler was personally asked by Sia to appear in the video via Twitter. The video was directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, and was choreographed by Ryan Heffington.Ziegler shared her thoughts about the choreography with New york magazine.

"I like the whole dance. It was really different and weird for me, because I usually don't, you know, be a crazy person every time. It was so fun to do and it was really out of the box and it expanded me a lot, because I'm used to competition dances where you're like, "Point your toes!" But this time it was like, you just need to let go and feel it."
The video went viral on YouTube and became the seventh most-watched video on the video-sharing website of 2014.It has received over 880 million views, becoming the 15th most viewed YouTube video of all time.As of January 2015, Billboard ranked the video at number 12, on the list of the 20 best of the 2010s (so far). Both Rolling Stone magazine and Spin magazine named it the Best Music Video of 2014 .VH1 listed it first among the "most groundbreaking" videos of 2014.

The reason i have chosen this video as one of my favourite music videos is due to how unique it.the setting makes you wonder why such a young girl is there alone and how did she get there.who owns or did own the apartment and why is it now derelict. The dance routine is amazing and helps create an atmosphere of not knowing what will happen next.A lot of music videos now seem to have random things in frame and it makes the viewers wonder why its there.this video to me is like we have been allowed into sia head and here thoughts abut what the song was about

what is the worlds most popular music video and why?

Gangnam Style is worlds most watched music video on the Internet but why?i wanted to find out what reasons this video was so popular so i can maybe incorporate some of the ideas in my music video.

  1.   The music is catchy: the rhyme is simple and representing
  2.  Synergy between the music and visuals: the visuals are cut to fit the rhyme really well making the most of the interaction between the two
  3. Silly but fun:yes it is silly but that's why we want to watch it
  4. Ambiguity and intrigue several of the scene make us wonder what is going on for example who's the guy in the sports car
  5. The artist psy doesn't take it too seriously
  6. South Korea is cool: its different to the normal video in the UK or USA it adds interest as its a country not many people have visited.
  7. The dance: the dance seen in the video is easy to learn and gives the video a memorable feature

  • The music is catchy: The rhythm is simple and repetitive.

  • Synergy between the music and visuals: The visuals are cut to fit the rhythm really well, making the most of the interaction between the two.

  • Silly but fun: Yes, it is silly, but, as someone in the group said, “it is a pure joy to watch.”

  • Ambiguity and intrigue: Several of the scenes are ambiguous and make people wonder what is going on. Who is the guy in the sports car? What’s up with the guy in the elevator?

  • Doesn’t take itself seriously: Psy is making fun of himself while making fun of every pop video cliché you have ever seen.

  • South Korean cool: Would the video have the same appeal if it came from a U.S. or UK rapper? The origins of the video lend it a certain charm for people elsewhere in the world.

  • The format lends itself to parody: Whether it is the Thai Navy, Eton School or My Little Pony, the video provides content that is easy to replicate.

  • The dance: It is simple to learn and extends the engagement from the digital to the physical world.

  • The back story: The fact that Gangnam is a district in Seoul, originally somewhat seedy but now the haunt of the nouveau riche lends extra depth to the video’s success.

  • Peer pressure: Now that the video has been seen by so many people, peer pressure encourages people to watch the video in self-defense – “What? You still have not watched it? Lame!”

    genres of music

There are many types of music that attract different audiences. Many examples are shown above with top artists of that genre that fit into these categories.

This information above tells us that pop music last year was the most popular in the UK. I will be creating a music video from a pop type artist as it will allow me to cater to the widest audience in the UK.I will also look into other popular genre of my target audience like indie and singer song writers. As pop music actually means popular music as its an easy and catchy genre that most commonly appears in the charts.
An example of a pop music artist is Justin beiber. who is known world wide for his catchy tunes. He has over 65 million followers on twitter alone showing his popularity within this genre. the video to the right is the Justin signing his first hit "baby".

Indie music is becoming more popular and beginning to take over the charts. this is due to people wanting to break the mold and explore more underground and independent artists.this genre has also grown in popularity due to the fashion becoming more indie too but what does this mean? this is that  people are freely expressing there individual style and i believe this century is all about people being able to express there person sound and style therefore supporting the idea of indie being the way this teen demographic is moving towards.

This is the band the 1975, with over 930,000 followers on twitter alone they where one of the first indie bands to make it big in the charts. Here's there video "girls".

Singer song writers are big in the charts as there songs reflect personal experience which allows them to connect to fans on a more personal level. One artist who came from this type of story is ed sheeran he is one of the most talked about artist right now. With over 15million twitter followers he is a very influential figure in the charts at the moment. Here is his music video of lego house.

theories and conventions that make a good music video

    Andrew Goodwin

    There were said to be 5 key aspects to a music video that as the audience we should look out for, these were ;
    • Thought beats - seeing the sound
    • Narrative and performance
    • The star image
    • the relation to visual and song
    • the technical aspects- special effects
I will be following Goodwin's theory as it uses the main conventions to help me create a successful music video.

i asked 30 people about what they thought made a good video and these where the results.

    the history of music videos

whats the purpose of a music video?

We can understand that the purpose of a music video is to visually support a song to help create a story or atmosphere and help to us understand maybe what the artist believes the song is about.
